Ebook About A haunted house story for the 21st century, INFIDEL follows an American Muslim woman and her multi-racial neighbors who move into a building haunted by entities that feed off xenophobia. Best-selling editor PORNSAK PICHETSHOTE (Swamp Thing, Daytripper, The Unwritten) makes his comics writing debut alongside artist extraordinaire AARON CAMPBELL (The Shadow, James Bond: Felix Leiter), award-winning colorist and editor JOSE VILLARRUBIA (Batman: Year 100, Spider-Man: Reign) and letterer / designer JEFF POWELL (SCALES AND SCOUNDRELS). “Like nothing I’ve read before… Highly recommended.” – STEVE NILES (30 Days of Night, WINNEBAGO GRAVEYARD) ‘Believable horror that’s as unsettling as it is beautiful to look at.’ – JOCK (WYTCHES) “Brilliant horror with a terrifying contemporary resonance. This feels way, way too real.” - MIKE CAREY (Lucifer) Collects INFIDEL #1-5Book Infidel Review :
For a guy who hasn't written many comics, Mr Pichetshote does pretty well for himself here. Starts off a little rough, with the interior monologs being a bit heavy-handed, but the concept is solid and keeps you going and then it's smooth sailing. The characters build nicely. Tricky topics (what's PC? Are muslims dangerous or not?) elevate it as a horror story. These cultural issues give us a landscape for the story (which is a lot better than your "4 average middle class teens in a haunted house" thaing) and offers us a chance to examine our own feelings on difficult issues through the characters' struggles. Still scaring you is the priority and politics better not get in the way!Aaron Cambell does a VERY nice job with the art. I wasn't familiar with his work previously (I think he's fairly new) but he's got chops! Clear distinctive people, crazyass monsters and VERY moody settings. Feels fresh and exciting.Recommended y'all! I really struggled to get to the end of this graphic novel. By the time I was coming to the last set of pages, I was ready to give it up. But I persisted."INFIDEL" is an unholy mess. So, what's wrong with it? The key problem is the story and its disjointed progression. It needed a strong developmental editor. The writer tried presenting a ton of information into the plot. But because of his apparent ineptness at crafting fiction, he introduces too many supporting characters who spoke too much. It resulted in the script being overburdened with balloons and narration boxes. That, effectively, rendered the well-drawn wraiths window dressing.Much of the dialogue got caught up into the writer's social messaging and his pandering to "wokeness"; this contributed to the story's stumbling flow. As a result, what is promised as a riveting horror story is anything but. (The writer even managed to insert a "Karen" who lives in 3-B. Lol.)And after a while, there are so many subplots and badly delineated and placed flashbacks, it became a torment to turn the pages. Another sad thing about this book is: it can make a simple reader feel intellectually inadequate. It is supposed to be, after all, this highly praised and rated book. It didn't affect me thus, anyway, since I've always been the boy who never heard of the King's new clothes, and think this work is naked, and what hangs out is not at all impressive. This graphic novel, in the hands of a writer who understood the basics of creative writing, and who worked with an artist who wasn't so "clever" could have been a gem. It isn't.
