I was a fan of the Defenders from day one. I own a nearly complete run of the series, missing only a handful of issues from the period of time represented in the first three volumes of the Marvel Masterworks series. I have always felt that the first three years of the Defenders title was probably the best period for this title. The classic Sal Buscema artwork is a joy to behold, and the story lines were vintage Marvel. Most importantly the writers who worked on the title during this period of time varied the types of stories between the sorcery based ones showcasing Doctor Strange and non-sorcery based stories showcasing the rest of the Defenders team. Sadly, later writers on this title tended to concentrate on stories primarily based around Doctor Strange and sorcery often times short changing the rest of the team in the process.There seems to be this tendency with the Defenders to treat the entire team as nothing more than a showcase for Doctor Strange, ignoring all the other strong characters in the group. I firmly believe that this a major reason why all the attempts to revive this team over the years have failed, the creators have forgotten that there were/are other characters in the group besides Doctor Strange!I suggest that before Marvel tries another revival attempt - they go back and READ these stories. These are the stories that laid the foundation which helped to make the Defenders a success for over a decade. Sorcery, science fiction, fantasy, and straight ahead super-hero action are all featured in these issues. They say variety is the spice of life, and nowhere is that more evident than here in this collection of stories!Volume Two features the classic Avengers Vs Defenders storyline in which Marvel's two major super-hero teams of the time period were tricked into fighting each other by the evil Dormammu. As a premise this was lame, but still one has to remember that this whole story line was one of the earliest examples of the "event" style type of stories which have come to dominate virtually every comic being produced today. You know the type of story I'm talking about - the multi-titled, multi-part story line that exists for no other reason other than to sell comics! Well, now you can read one of the earliest examples of this type of story, and compare it with the ones that are being produced today.Marvel Masterworks: The Defenders - Volume Two, is a Classic Bronze Age collection featuring strong artwork and so-so stories. Still, despite the flawed story lines, these comics have much to offer fans of older comics who find today's comics too violent or too dark. Younger readers will probably be turned off by the stories and the classic American style artwork - since many of today's collectors prefer the Manga inspired artwork of today. Recommended for older collectors and younger collectors who have an open mind and want to try something "classic" (published before 2000).
